1911 T3 Turkey Red PSA-Graded Hall of Famers Collection (14)
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $4,700
Extremely attractive low-grade collection of fourteen different Hall of Famers from the classic T3 Turkey Red cabinet card issue (out of a total of twenty-five Hall of Famers in the set), each of which has been graded and encapsulated by PSA or SGC. All fourteen Hall of Famers have checklist backs (unless otherwise noted). The collection consists of the following: #5 Sam Crawford (PSA PR-FR 1), 8 Fred Clarke (PSA VG-EX 4 [mk], person's name written in black ink along the top border on the reverse), 16 Johnny Evers (PSA PR 1), 18 Hughie Jennings (PSA PR-FR 1), 26 John McGraw (PSA PR-FR 1), 27 Christy Mathewson (SGC POOR 10), 39 Rube Waddell (SGC POOR 10), 40 Vic Willis/Pitt. & St. Louis (PSA PR-FR 1), 47 Frank Chance (SGC GOOD 30), 78 Home Run Baker (Turkey Red back, PSA VG-EX 4 [mk], ink notations on the reverse), 80 Chief Bender (SGC did not assign a number grade and deemed it authentic, due to a very slight trim along the top border, Vg appearance), 87 Eddie Collins (Turkey Red back, PSA VG-EX 4 [mk], ink notations on the reverse), 124 Bobby Wallace (PSA did not assign a number grade and deemed it authentic, due to a very slight trim along the left border, Pr appearance), and 125 Ed Walsh (PSA GOOD 2). Turkey Red cabinets are universally recognized as among the most beautiful baseball-card issues ever produced. T3s are never "going out of style" with collectors, and the opportunity to acquire such a large group of different Hall of Famers is particularly rare. The collection was assembled one card at a time with great care. This is an exciting collection that represents a very substantial, and at the same time relatively affordable, foundation toward the assembly of a complete collection of Turkey Red Hall of Famers. Because of their large dimensions, T3s are frequently found in technically low grade, with pin holes and other minor problems which have a great impact on technical grades. Most of these cards have tremendous visual appeal despite their various mostly minor condition problems. It is easy to see why T3s are so highly sought after in all grades, especially technically lower grades. These cards represent a tremendous value compared to Turkey Reds in a higher grade, or even Hall of Famers from most other 1910-era tobacco-card sets. This is an extremely substantial and attractive collection of Hall of Famers from one of card collecting's most classic sets, with far better eye-appeal than suggested by their technically accurate grades. Total 14 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $4,700
