1911 E94 George Close Candy Cy Young - PSA NM 7
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $14,100
Graded NM 7 by PSA. One of only two examples graded at this level by PSA, with none graded higher. Extremely high grade PSA E94 example of Hall of Famer Cy Young. This is a particularly fascinating card of Young both because he is identified as “Old” Cy Young along the bottom border of the card, and the image of Young used on this card pictures him in a Boston Red Sox uniform even though he is identified with Cleveland on the card. This is a gem of a card, perfectly clean front and back, with four sharp corners, a slight tilt to the image, a slight diamond cut, and a brilliant image set against a bold green background. The unusually sharp cut to this card suggests to us the possibility that this might be a sheet-cut card; the slight diamond-cut suggests the cut is natural. We have seen similar sharp cuts on other caramel cards (particularly E93, E94, and E98), but have not seen or heard of an E98 uncut sheet (or even a panel). The back has the checklist for the set. While at a glance E94s may be easily confused with other caramel-card sets of the era (E93 and E98 specifically), they are an entirely different set, even though they use many of the same subjects and poses. Of the three previously mentioned sets, E94s are the most difficult. The E94 caramel-card set is usually associated with the George Close Co. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. While the majority of the E94 cards do not have any sort of advertisement on the back, some have been found with overprints that refer to this company. Caramel cards, of course, are rarely found in high grade. This is the highest-graded example ever of E94 Young by PSA or SGC (the highest grade in the SGC population report is an EX+ 70). This is an extremely high-grade PSA 7 Near Mint example of the legendary Cy Young from this rare, early twentieth-century candy issue, worthy of the finest “E” card, Hall of Famer, or prewar card collection. The SMR value for the assigned grade is $17,000. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $14,100
