1914 B18 Felt Blanket Collection with Ty Cobb (39)

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,115

Collection of thirty-nine B18 blankets, all ranging in grade from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex overall), highlighted by Ty Cobb. These 5.25-inch squares of “flannel baseball cards” were issued in 1914, with several popular brands of tobacco. They are referred to as “blankets” because they were intended to be sewn together to create bed covers, pillowcases, etc. Often overlooked by collectors, B18s are beginning to be recognized both for their scarcity, and for the exceptional value they represent compared to many other 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. Collection of thirty-nine B18s: (color refers to pennants, infield, or basepaths, per The Standard Catalog checklist): Adams (purple), Agnew (purple), two Ainsmith (green), G. Burns (green), T. Burns (white), Carey (HOF, purple), Ty Cobb (white, grades Vg-Ex due to spots of toning from age), Cole (green), two Coveleski (white), Daubert (green), Doyle (green), two Gowdy (white), Grant (green), Griffith (white with green), Hartzell (green), Hummel (green), two Keating (green), Kelley (purple), Maisel (green), Mann (white), Maranville (HOF, white), three Miller (green), three Moriarty (white), Murray (green), three O'Toole (2 purple and one red), Snodgrass (green), Turner (purple), Viox (red), and Walsh (purple). An impressive group including three Hall of Famers and several scarce purple basepath blankets. Total 39 blankets. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
