1933 R319 Goudey Gum Near-Complete Set (234 of 240)

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $14,100

35% range from Ex to Ex-Mt (includes some Nr/Mt and Nr/Mt-Mt), 55% range from Vg to Vg-Ex, 10% lesser grades (many of these lesser-graded cards actually have an Ex or better appearance, and have been appropriately downgraded due to having a very slight trim). The 1933 Goudey set is universally recognized as the single most popular and collected of all 1930s gum issues, and one of the most significant of all prewar baseball-card issues. This medium- to high-grade near-complete set (234 of the 240 cards) is highlighted by fifty-eight Hall of Famers including magnificent examples of Babe Ruth (#53), Jimmie Foxx, and Dizzy Dean. The set is missing only the following six cards for completion: #106 Lajoie, 119 Hornsby, 144 Ruth, 149 Ruth, 160 Gehrig, and 181 Ruth. We have selected twenty-seven cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Bengough (Gd), 2 Vance (Ex), 5 Herman (Vg), 7 Lyons (Vg), 19 Dickey (EX+ 70), 20 Terry (Vg), 22 Traynor (VG/EX 50), 23 Cuyler (possible slight trim, otherwise Vg), 25 Waner (Vg), 29 Foxx (Vg-Ex), 31 Lazzeri (possible slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), 35 Simmons (Ex), 42 Collins (EX 60), 44 Bottomley (Vg), 47 Manush (Vg), 49 Frisch (Vg), 53 Ruth (VG/EX 50, particularly strong card, bright and crisp, tremendous example, apparently downgraded due to a tiny indentation that is of no consequence, we grade this card EX), 56 Ruffing (Vg-Ex), 60 Hoyt (Vg-Ex), 63 Cronin (Vg-Ex), 64 Grimes (Vg-Ex), 73 Haines (Vg), 74 Rixey (80/20 L/R, otherwise Nr/Mt), 76 Cochrane (Vg-Ex), 79 Faber (Vg-Ex), 89 Speaker (EX/NM 80), 92 Gehrig (Gehrig's name is written in blue ink across the front, o/w Vg), 102 Jackson (Vg-Ex), 103 Combs (Vg-Ex), 107 Manush (EX/NM 80), 109 Cronin (Ex), 110 Goslin (90/10 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 117 Maranville (Vg), 125 Terry (Fr, background pencil notation erased), 127 Ott (NM 84), 128 Klein (70/30 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 133 Lindstrom (Vg-Ex), 134 Rice (Vg-Ex), 138 Pennock (30/70 L/R and 80/20 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt), 147 Durocher (Vg), 154 Foxx (EX 60), 158 Berg (Vg-Ex), 164 Waner (Vg), 165 Sewell (Vg), 168 Goslin (Vg-Ex), 187 Manush (Vg-Ex), 188 Hornsby (EX 60), 189 Cronin (NM+ 86), 194 Averill (Ex), 197 Ferrell (80/20 L/R, otherwise Ex), 202 Hartnett (Ex), 207 Ott (small surface paper chip at the top, otherwise Ex), 211 Wilson (Ex), 216 Gomez (EX/NM 80), 220 Grove (Vg-Ex), 222 Gehringer (VG 40), 223 Dean (PSA EX-MT+ 6.5, this card was already graded, not submitted by REA; great-looking card), 227 Herman (Ex-Mt), 229 Vaughn (20/80 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 230 Hubbell (EX 60), 234 Hubbell (Vg-Ex/Ex), and 240 Schumacher (Ex). The additional SGC graded cards: Two NM/MT 88: #232 O'Doul and 235 Fitzsimmons. One NM+ 86: #123. Four NM 84: #121, 196, 233, and 239. Five EX/NM 80: #68, 105, 111, 112, and 237. One EX 60: #72. One VG/EX 50: #113. The equivalent total SMR for the twenty-eight graded cards alone (not including the 206 ungraded cards) is $11,180. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 234 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000+. SOLD FOR $14,100
