1933 R338 Sport Kings Near-Complete Set Including Cobb and Ruth (37/48)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $29,375

Presented are thirty-seven of the forty-eight cards which comprise this classic multisport 1930s prewar gum issue. (The eleven cards missing for completion are #6 Thorpe, 18 Tunney, 19 Shore, 22, 25, 30 Johnson, 31, 35 Rockne, 40, 45 Didrickson, and 47). These have been consigned by the family of an old-time collector who was active decades ago. While the collection does vary a great deal in grade, when these cards arrived we could not help but be surprised at the exceptional high-grade of some of the cards. We have selected eighteen cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA: Two NM-MT 8: #37 Madison (only one graded higher) and 46 Vines (only one graded higher). Two NM+ 7.5: #26 Wedell and 41 Browning. Five NM 7: #9 Blood, 36 Hoppe, 38 Jones, 42 Hubbell, and 43 Carnera. Two EX-MT+ 6.5: #5 Wachter and 13 Fator. Four PSA EX-MT 6: #7 Walthour, 15 McNamara, 27 Turner, and 48 Seppala. One EX+ 5.5: #4 Grange. Two VG-EX 4: #1 Cobb and 2 Ruth. Condition composite of the balance (19 cards): Three cards grade Ex: #10, 28, and 39. Two cards grade Vg-Ex: #8 Hagen and 12. Four cards grade Vg: #3 Holman, 29 Bailey, 32 Lopchick, and 34. Ten cards in lesser grades: #11, 14, 16 Tilden, 17 Dempsey, 20 Kahanamoku, 21 Weissmuller, 23, 24 Morenz, 33 Burke, and 44 Baer. A very attractive mixed-grade near-complete set, with many condition and value highlights, and with even the lesser-graded cards having a far superior eye-appeal than their technically accurate assigned grades. Tremendous break value. The SMR value just on the eighteen graded cards alone is $11,405. Total 37 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $29,375
