1887 N173 Goodwin Old Judge Cabinet Jimmy Ryan
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,350
Graded EX 60 by SGC. Stunning high-grade sample of one of the most revered of all nineteenth-century baseball-card issues: the N173 Goodwin Old Judge cabinet card series. The offered card features Chicago outfielder Jimmy Ryan (leaning bat) in front of an elaborate stadium background.
This is an outstanding and ideal N173 example. One of the game's early power hitters, Jimmy Ryan led the National League in home runs, hits, and doubles for Chicago in 1888. He was a leader in the movement that established the Players' League in 1890. Ryan was one of the game's most durable stars. Many believe that his impressive statistics, which include 2,502 hits and a lifetime .306 batting average over eighteen seasons, qualify him for consideration for induction to the Hall of Fame. The image on this card is very bold, with unimprovable contrast and tremendous detail. Very bright, crisp, and clean, both front and back (two small spots on the blank reverse of no consequence may be responsible for this card not grading even higher). This is an extraordinary high quality example from one of the nineteenth century's most substantial and highly regarded sets. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $2,350
