1934 R320 Goudey Near-Complete Set Including Gehrig (92 of 96)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $8,225
Outstanding high-grade near-complete set of 1934 Goudey Gum consists of 92 different of the 96 cards in the set, missing only the following four cards for completion: #2 Cochrane, 61 Gehrig (batting), 67, and 72. The 1934 Goudey, also commonly referred to as the "Lou Gehrig says..." set, is one of the most popular of all 1930s bubble-gum card issues. Included are stars such as Lou Gehrig, Dizzy Dean, Hank Greenberg, Lefty Grove, and Jimmy Foxx, among others, as well as the very scarce 24-card high number (#73-96) series that has always made completing this classic set especially challenging for collectors. Fifteen cards have been graded by SGC (all submitted by REA). Keys: #1 Foxx (Pr), 6 Dean (EX+ 70), 7 Durocher (Ex), 10 Klein (EX/NM 80), 11 Waner (trimmed), 12 Hubbell (Ex), 13 Frisch (Vg), 18 Manush (Ex), 19 Grove (trimmed), 21 Terry (Vg-Ex), 22 Vaughn (Vg/Vg-Ex), 23 Gehringer (trimmed), 27 Appling (trimmed), 34 Hafey (Vg-Ex), 35 Lombardi (Vg), 37 Gehrig (NM 7, bright and clean, front and back, with perfect colors, flawless registration, and just a hint of wear on the sharp corners), and 62 Greenberg (trimmed). The condition of the 24 rare high numbers (#73-96) is as follows: five cards graded NM 84 by SGC (#74, 75, 76, 80, and 83); twelve cards range from Ex to Ex-Mt (#81, 82 [EX 60], 84, 85 [EX/NM 80], 86, 87, 90 Cuyler, 91, 93 [EX 60], 94 Rolfe, 95, and 96 DeShong [last card in set]); four cards graded VG/EX 50 by SGC (#26, 73, 88, and 89); four cards are slightly trimmed (#77, 78, 79, and 92). The balance of the cards grade as follows: 50% Ex to Ex-Mt (includes a few better), 35% Vg to Vg-Ex, and 15% slightly lesser grades (includes a few slightly trimmed). This is a very attractive near-complete set of this classic Goudey issue, which is highlighted by eighteen Hall of Famers (including Lou Gehrig), and twenty-four scarce high-number series cards. The equivalent SMR value for just the fifteen SGC-graded cards (not including the 77 ungraded cards) is $9,020. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 92 cards. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $8,225
