1934 R320 Goudey Complete Set (96)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,819

Presented is a very attractive medium-grade complete set of 1934 R320 Goudey Gum. 40% of the cards range in grade from Vg-Ex to Ex, 35% Vg, and 25% are in lesser grades (the lower-grade cards include some nice-looking cards that upon close examination are trimmed). The 1934 Goudey, also commonly referred to as the "Lou Gehrig says..." set, is one of the most popular of all 1930s bubble-gum card issues. Included are stars such as Lou Gehrig (who appears on two cards; portrait and batting), Dizzy Dean, and Jimmy Foxx, among others, as well as the very scarce 24-card high-number (#73-96) series that has always made completing this classic set especially challenging for collectors. We have selected five cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 Foxx (SGC Auth, slight trim), 2 Cochrane (SGC VG/EX 50), 6 Dean (Gd-Vg), 7 Durocher (possible slight trim, otherwise Ex), 10 Klein (Vg), 11 Waner (slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), 12 Hubbell (Vg/Vg-Ex), 13 Frisch (Vg-Ex), 18 Manush (Vg), 19 Grove (slight trim, otherwise Vg), 21 Terry (SGC VG 40), 22 Vaughan (Gd), 23 Gehringer (slight trim, otherwise Vg), 27 Appling (slight trim, otherwise Ex/Ex-Mt), 34 Hafey (slight trim, otherwise Ex), 35 Lombardi (Vg), 37 Gehrig (SGC FAIR 20), 61 Gehrig (SGC VG 40), 62 Greenberg (Gd). The condition of the twenty-four rare high numbers (#73-96) is as follows: thirteen cards are Vg, including #96 DeShong; seven cards are in lesser grades; and four are trimmed, including #90 Cuyler and 94 Rolfe. This is a very attractive and relatively affordable complete set of this classic Goudey issue, with a few condition problems but mostly very attractive mid-grade cards, which is highlighted by twenty Hall of Famers (including two SGC-graded Lou Gehrigs, one Fair and one VG), and twenty-four scarce high-number series cards. Total 96 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,819
