1933 DeLong Gum Collection of 38 Cards (17 different of 24 cards in set plus 21 duplicates)
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $6,463
Near-complete set of 1933 DeLong Gum comprised of seventeen different of the twenty-four cards in the set, plus twenty-one duplicates, for a total of thirty-eight cards. We have selected five cards to be graded by SGC. These five highlights are two NM 84 (#17 Martin and 23 Grove), two VG/EX 50 (#6 Cochrane and 21 Foxx), and one VG 40 (#2 Simmons). DeLongs have always held a special place in the hearts of collectors. The small size of the set, their relative rarity compared to most others card sets of the era, their unique dimensions and design, and their status as a “one-year issue” all combine to give DeLongs a mystique among serious collectors. The near-set (17 of 24 cards) is comprised of the following: #1 McManus (possible very slight trim across top, Ex appearance), 2 Simmons (VG 40), 4 Terry (Vg), 5 Gehringer (Vg), 6 Cochrane (VG/EX 50), 9 (Vg-Ex), 10 O'Doul (Ex), 11 Lindstrom (Vg-Ex), 13 Maranville (Ex), 14 Gomez (Vg-Ex), 15 (Vg-Ex), 17 Martin (NM 84), 18 (Vg-Ex), 21 Foxx (VG/EX 50), 22 Klein (Vg-Ex), 23 Grove (NM 84), and 24 Goslin (Vg). Missing only the following seven cards for completion: #3 Mellilo, 7 Gehrig, 8 Cuyler, 12 Traynor, 16 Warneke, 19 Hafey, and 20 Ruffing. The twenty-one duplicates (11 different) are as follows: #1 McManus (Gd), two 5 Gehringer (Vg and Gd), three 9 (Vg and two Gd), 10 O'Doul (Vg), 13 Maranville (Vg-Ex), three 14 Gomez (two Ex and Vg), 15 (Vg), two 17 Martin (both Vg), five 18 (all Vg), 23 Grove (Vg-Ex), and 24 Goslin (Gd). This is a very significant and (for DeLongs) a very large group, with several significant highlights (especially the two SGC NM Hall of Famers; these two cards alone have an equivalent SMR value of $1,950). This is a very clean and attractive group, including a total of nineteen Hall of Famers, and missing only seven cards for the completion of a very pleasing mid- to high-grade set of these 1930s classics. Total 38 cards (seventeen different plus twenty-one duplicates). Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+. SOLD FOR $6,463
