1935 R321 Goudey "4 in 1" Near-Complete Set (35 of 36)

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $6,463

Extremely attractive high-grade near-complete set of 1935 R321 Goudey "4 in 1" comprised of
thirty-five of the thirty-six cards, highlighted by twenty-three Hall of Famers, including a particularly outstanding example of Babe Ruth. The only card missing for completion is a common (#33 Harder/Knickerbocker). This magnificent set is easily one of the best 1935 Goudey set we have ever offered. 1935 Goudeys are very susceptible to edge and corner wear due to their flush-to-the-border design. This set, assembled by Charlie Conlon, was obviously the result of a great deal of time, effort, and patience. The 1935 Goudey series is one of the company’s most interesting efforts. Each card features four players and the set is highlighted by the legendary Babe Ruth. This was Ruth’s last card as a player. The portrait image of Ruth is a close-up detail from his 1933 Goudey card #181 dugout pose, and because the set was issued in 1935, he is identified on this card as a member of the Boston Braves. Ruth appeared in just 28 games with the Braves in 1935 before retiring as a player. The reverse of these cards feature puzzle pieces, which can be collected and assembled to form a large baseball picture. We have selected twenty cards (56% of the set) to be graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA). In the following condition composite, cards are identified by the numbers provided in the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards checklist. SGC Condition Report: Two NM/MT 88: #20 and 35. One NM+ 86: #9 Berry/Vance. Six NM 84: #4 Appling, 11, 13 Bonura/Lyons, 24 Cochrane/Simmons, 26 Crowder/Goslin, and 36 Traynor (condition sensitive last card in set). Six EX/NM 80: #2, 8, 22 Dean/Frisch, 23, 29 R. Ferrell/W. Ferrell, and 31 Foxx. Two EX 60: #6 Bartell/Ott and 16 Ruth/Maranville (light wear on the corners and edges, perfect registration, and centered towards the top left). Three VG/EX 50: #12 Blanton/Herman, 30 Fox/Greenberg, and 34 Jackson/Terry. Additional keys: #1 Adams/Bottomley (Ex-Mt), 5 Averill/Trosky (Ex), 10 Bishop/Cronin (Ex), 14 Bottomley/Comorsky (Vg-Ex), 17 Cochrane/Gehringer (Gd-Vg), 19 Waners/Hoyt (Vg-Ex), 27 Cuyler/Grimes/Klein (Ex), 28 Dickey/Lazzeri/Ruffing (Ex), and 32 Hadley/Manush (Vg-Ex). The balance of cards grade: five cards are Ex, one Vg-Ex, one Vg. This is an extremely attractive and very high-grade (for this issue) near-complete set of this classic Goudey issue, which is highlighted by twenty-three Hall of Famers including Babe Ruth’s last card as a player. The equivalent total SMR for the assigned grades (not including the fifteen ungraded cards) is $5,560. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 35 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $6,463
