1937 Wheaties - Series 9 Proof Collection Including Joe DiMaggio (11)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,763
The 1937 Wheaties (Series 9) cards offered here are not cards cut from the back of cereal boxes but are, in fact, proofs printed on thinner stock that obviously originated at one time directly from Wheaties or the printer. Pre-production proofs theoretically exist for many sets, but rarely survive. These are the only 1930s Wheaties proofs we have ever seen. The fact that these Wheaties cards never appeared on boxes is also no doubt related to their extremely high grade. Offered is a collection of eleven (of the 16 in the set) extremely colorful 1937 Wheaties (Series 9) production proofs (6 x 8 inches), highlighted by Joe DiMaggio the key to the set. The collection consists of Bonura (Vg-Ex), Clift (Ex), Cuyler (HOF, Ex-Mt), DiMaggio (HOF, Ex/Ex-Mt), Feller (HOF, Vg/Vg-Ex), Grove (HOF, Ex-Mt), Herman (HOF, Vg/Vg-Ex), Jordan (Vg/Vg-Ex), Martin (Ex), Moses (Ex-Mt), and Vaughan (HOF, Ex-Mt). This sixteen-card set featuring one player from each Major League team is often referred to as the "Color Series," and is especially prized for its extremely attractive and colorful design. Total 11 proofs. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,763
