1941 Play Ball Complete Set (72)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,525
Extremely attractive mid-grade complete set of the 1941 Play Ball series issued by Gum, Inc., one of card collecting's all-time classic gum issues. The cards range in grade from Vg to Vg-Ex/Ex, with a few in slightly better condition (Ex), and just a few with a Vg-Ex or Ex appearance but with a slight trim. This full-color seventy-two-card set includes many Hall of Famers and stars, including Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, both of which are graded by SGC. We have selected six cards to be graded by SGC (all submitted by REA). Keys: #1 Miller (Ex), 6 Hubbell (EX 60), 8 Ott (Vg-Ex/Ex), 10 Vaughan (slight trim), 13 Foxx (VG 40), 14 Williams (VG 40), 15 Cronin (Vg), 18 Greenberg (Vg-Ex/Ex), 19 Gehringer (EX 60), 20 Ruffing (slight trim), 39 Henrich (Ex), 54 Reese RC (Vg), 60 Klein (slight trim), 61 V. DiMaggio (Ex-Mt), 63 D. DiMaggio (Vg), 64 Doerr (Vg), 70 Dickey (VG 40, particularly strong card for this grade), 71 J. DiMaggio (VG/EX 50), and 72 Gomez (Gd). One of the great things about card collecting is that the classic card sets can be collected in any condition, on any budget. This set may be far from Mint, but it is a still a very attractive and very consistent set with many condition highlights (including very pleasing examples of key cards Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio). This set offers an outstanding value, and is a relatively much more affordable alternative to a higher-grade set of this very popular prewar gum issue. The equivalent SMR value for just the six SGC graded cards (not including the 66 ungraded cards) is $1,890. Total 72 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,525
