High-Grade 1949 Bowman Partial Set Including Jackie Robinson (151/240)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $10,575
Extraordinarily high grade1949 Bowman partial set of 151 different (out of 240 cards in set). Bright, crisp, clean, and uncirculated! These have been consigned by the family of an old-time collector who was active decades ago. He obviously didn't handle his 1949 Bowman cards! They were probably purchased in 1949 and left virtually untouched. When these cards arrived we were amazed at the condition of the group. This is the first time we have ever sent a 1949 Bowman card in for grading to PSA and received a MINT 9! As can be seen below, twenty-eight cards received grades of NM-MT or better. All of the grades were well deserved. Processing the collection from which these cards originated was like organizing a collecting time-capsule. These 1949 Bowmans, which had obviously not been handled since 1949, may have been the highlight. The eighty-nine cards missing for completion (18 low #s and 71 high #s) include #24 Musial, 110 Wynn, 214 Ashburn, 224 Paige, 226 Snider, 233 Doby, and 238 Lemon. We have selected thirty-six cards to be graded and encapsulated by PSA. The PSA grades are as follows: Two MINT 9: #34 (one of three graded at this level, with none higher) and 129 (one of seven graded at this level, with none higher). Eight NM-MT+ 8.5: #10, 12, 13, 20, 30, 104 Stanky (RC), 130, and 132 (printed name). Sixteen NM-MT 8: #8 (OC), 11 Boudreau, 15, 16, 17, 33 Spahn, 86 Pesky, 100 Hodges, 115, 127 (printed name), 131, 133, 134, 137, 140, and 183 (high #). Three NM+ 7.5: #23 Doerr, 60 Berra, and 112. Five NM 7: #31, 36 Reese, 46 Roberts (RC), 79, and 106. One EX-MT 6: #21. One EX 5: #84 Campanella (RC). Additional Keys: #1 Bickford (Vg), 27 Feller (sheet-cut, otherwise Nr/Mt), 29 Kiner (Ex), 50 Robinson (sheet-cut, otherwise Ex), 65 Slaughter (Ex), 70 Furillo RC (sheet-cut, otherwise Ex), 85 Mize NNOF (Vg-Ex), 98 Rizzuto NNOF (sheet-cut, otherwise Ex), 111 Schoendienst (sheet-cut, otherwise Ex-Mt), and 210 Gordon (Pr). The balance of the cards grade: Low Numbers (82 cards): seventy-five cards range from Ex to Ex-Mt, seven range from Vg to Vg-Ex. High Numbers (23 cards): eighteen cards range from Ex to Ex-Mt, five range from Vg to Vg-Ex. 1949 Bowman is the most underrated set in terms of rarity among Topps and Bowman sets issued between 1948 and 1955. Cards from this set are extremely hard to find in high grade in part because these cards often naturally have soft corners due to the quality of the paper stock on which they are printed. This very attractive, clean, and extremely high-grade partial set of this significant postwar baseball issue could provide the foundation for a world-class 1949 Bowman set. The SMR value for just thirty-six PSA graded cards (not including the 115 raw cards) is $5,406. Total 151 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $10,575
