1951 Bowman Uncut Double Printed Sheets, Panels, Plus Singles (650 cards)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,175
Just when we thought we've seen everything: This unusual collection of uncut double-printed sheets and cards from the 1951 Bowman baseball 6th series (cards #214-252) were recently found in the walls of a home in the Philadelphia area (no doubt related to the fact that Bowman was located in Philadelphia). This is the first time we have seen this style of printing error sheets from the Bowman Gum Company. Included are a total of over 650 cards, all in sheets and panels of various sizes as noted (with the exception of a small number of individually cut cards also as noted). Most of the sheets are blank-backed, but a few have cards printed on both sides. These are fascinating printing errors that were apparently used to test the presses or created in error, discarded as scrap, and miraculously wound up being perfectly preserved for the past fifty-eight years in the walls of a Philadelphia home (apparently used as insulation during construction). These unique cards would be ideal to cut from sheets and panels for collectors of unusual and unique printing oddities to enjoy in the form of individual cards. Comprised of the following sheets with approximate dimensions: 1) 27.5 x 22 inches with 91 cards including three examples each of card #218 Lopat, 219 Woodling RC, 232 Fox RC, and 233 Durocher. Small tear on right edge. Blank back. 2) Two 20.5 x 25.25 inches each with 80 cards including two examples each of card #218 Lopat, 219 Woodling RC, 232 Fox RC, and 233 Durocher. One sheet is missing the upper left corner. Blank back. 3) 15 x 28.25 inches with 63 cards including three examples each of card #232 Fox RC and 233 Durocher. A tear in the upper right corner. Blank back. 4) 14.25 x 15.75 inches with 35 cards including card #232 Fox RC and 233 Durocher. There is a 2 inch tear near the upper right corner. Blank back. 5) Two 11 x 31.5 inches each with 40 cards including three examples each of card #232 Fox RC and 233 Durocher. One sheet has moisture stains on the reverse. Blank back. 6) 9 x 31.5 inches with 40 cards including three examples each of card #218 Lopat and 219 Woodling RC. Double image printed on front and back. Uncut sections from larger sheets: 7) Twenty-six singles of which twenty have blank backs and six have printing on the front and back. 8) Seventeen 2-card panels of which eleven have blank backs and six have printing on the front and back. 9) Seven 3-card panels of which four have blank-backs and three have printing on the front and back. 10) Six 4-card sections of which five have blank backs and one have printing on the front and back. 11) Six 5-card sections of which four have blank backs and two have printing on the front and back. 12) Six 6-card sections of which four have blank backs and two have printing on the front and back. 13) Eleven sections consisting of 7 to 20 cards each, of which ten have blank backs and one has printing on the front and back. Very neat collection of these extremely fascinating 1951 Bowman printing errors. Total 87 items (representing 650+ cards). Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,175
