1955-1962 Topps Uncut Advertising Panels and 1952 Topps Sheet Section (6)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,406

Collection of five three-card advertising panels (three different and two duplicates) and one 1952 Topps 10-card uncut final production partial sheet. For many years (beginning in 1952 and continuing well into the 1960s), these rare three-card advertising panels were distributed by Topps only to grocery and candy storeowners for the purpose of announcing and providing samples of the new cards being offered. The fronts are uncut strips of three cards. The reverse of the advertising panel cards, however, are very different from those of the issued cards. The backs present advertising for the set directed to merchants, and the backs also often feature a single sample of a card reverse, which is usually that of a star such as Roger Maris (and not necessarily the back of one of the three players pictured on the front of the advertising panel). Because of their method of issue and purpose, all Topps advertising panels are rare. Over the years a small quantity of a few years (1955 Bowman, 1957 Topps, 1959 Topps, and 1964 Topps) have surfaced, making those panels somewhat available (though still quite scarce) and allowing collectors to be familiar with these advertising rarities. The other years are all extremely rare. This collection of five advertising panels includes the following: 1-2) two 1955 Topps #79/12/76 (The backs on this year correspond to the fronts, an advertising sticker covers the back of the center card that references both the regular series and the Double Header series; 1955 Topps ad panels have a Double Header card stapled to the reverse of the bottom card; one example has Al Kaline and the other has Monte Irvin stapled to it, both panels are Vg-Ex, with Ex overall appearance); 3-4) two 1961 Topps with #2 Maris back on reverse, along with illustrations of 1961 Topps insert stamps of Ford and Boyer (one Ex and the other has pencil marks on the back, otherwise Ex); 5) 1962 Topps ad panel with #60 NL Strikeout LDRS (Koufax and Drysdale) on the front and #1 Maris back on reverse, along with illustrations of two 1962 Topps insert stamps (Vg-Ex). 6) 1952 Topps baseball uncut sheet section: with ten different fifth series cards including Hall of Famer #268 Bob Lemon. This is a final production sheet section (obviously long ago cut from a full production sheet) with fully printed backs. The cards appearing on this sheet are #256-260, 266-270. The front has an Excellent appearance, with a few minor faults upon very close inspection, including light creases on the two far right cards and the top left card. There is a small edge tear on the left border. The reverse is problem-free. Despite minor imperfections, this uncut sheet section has a tremendous display value and an overall Excellent appearance. Dimensions: 13-3/8 x 8 inches. This a very impressive and unusual group of Topps items from the 1950s and 1960s. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 6 items (five 3-card advertising panels and one uncut partial sheet). Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,406
