1953 Topps Complete Set (274)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819

55% grade Excellent (with a few slightly better), 45% range from Vg to Vg-Ex. This is a very attractive mid-grade complete set of 1953 Topps, highlighted by a great -ooking example of the key card to the set: #82 Mickey Mantle. This is the type of vintage set that to many collectors represents the very best value. The cards are classic, they look great, and they don't cost a fortune compared to higher-grade cards. In many cases, in the highest grades, a few commons from an early 1950s set can be valued at more than an entire set such as this, and when it comes time to selling, a set such as this will actually generate far more interest by collectors as well, precisely because it is more affordable. We have selected six cards to be graded by SGC. Keys: #1 Robinson (VG 40), 10 Burgess SP (Ex), 27 Campanella (VG 40), 37 Mathews (Vg), 41 Slaughter (Vg-Ex), 43 McDougald (Gd-Vg), 54 Feller (Gd-Vg), 61 Wynn SP (Vg), 62 Irvin (Ex), 76 Reese (Vg), 77 Mize (Vg), 78 Schoendienst (Vg), 81 Black SP (30/70 L/R, otherwise Ex), 82 Mantle (VG/EX 50), 86 Martin (Vg-Ex), 87 Lopat (60/40 L/R, otherwise Ex-Mt), 104 Berra (Vg), 114 Rizzuto (Vg), 119 Sain SP (miscut along the left border, otherwise Nr/Mt), 138 Kell (Vg), 147 Spahn (Vg-Ex), 149 DiMaggio (Vg), 151 Wilhelm (Ex-Mt), 162 Klu (Vg), 191 Kiner (Vg), 207 Ford (Vg), 220 Paige (deemed Authentic due to slight trim along the top, otherwise Vg), 228 Newhouser (EX/NM 80), 244 Mays (GOOD 20), 246 Face (Ex-Mt), 254 Roe (Vg-Ex), 258 Gilliam SP (Vg), 263 Podres SP (Gd), 265 Jensen SP (Gd), 273 Haddix SP (Ex), 280 Bolling (Vg). This is an exceptionally attractive medium-grade set, far above average for this issue, with tremendous eye-appeal across the board. Total 274 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000.
