1955 Topps Double Headers Complete Set (66)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,233
High-grade complete set of the sixty-six cards from the 1955 Topps Double Headers series. Double Headers are one of the scarcest and most unusual of all early 1950s gum issues. The design of the set was inspired by the T201 “Double Folder” set issued by Mecca Tobacco in 1911. When issued in packs, the cards were perforated horizontally, allowing for easy folding, so that each card could picture two ballplayers sharing the same legs. It is interesting to note that while Topps’ standard issue of 1955 was smaller in number than many other years at just 206 subjects, each of the 112 players appearing in the Double Headers issue (two players per card) also appears in the standard set. It is also interesting to note that the backgrounds of the cards, when placed side-by-side, form a continuous stadium background image. Double Headers were not aggressively promoted and were sold in very limited numbers. In addition, most of those that did make it into the hands of youngsters were damaged as they were folded and unfolded countless times, as intended. The cards in the offered set have escaped most of the mishandling and are bright, crisp, and incredibly fresh across the board. We submitted five cards from this complete set to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #3/4 Irvin (Ex), 21/22 Skowron (miscut on the bottom, otherwise Ex-Mt), 25/26 J. Robinson (HOF, NM 84), 31/32 Banks (HOF, 75/25 T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt), 45/46 Kaline (HOF, EX 60), 53/54 Herman (HOF, Vg), 69/70 T. Williams (HOF, NM 84), 105/106 Aaron (HOF, VG/EX 50), 109/110 Newhouser (HOF, 80/20 T/B, otherwise Ex), 111/112 Killebrew (HOF, EX 60), 121/122 Kluszewski (80/20 T/B, otherwise Ex), 127/128 Spahn (HOF, 90/10 T/B, otherwise Ex-Mt), 129/130 Gilliam (30/70 L/R, otherwise Ex), 131/132 (Vg). The balance of the cards in the set grade 70% Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt, 15% Ex (downgraded from Ex-Mt or better due to miscut on the bottom), 15% range from Vg to Vg-Ex. This is a very attractive, crisp, and overall high-grade complete set of this unusual and often overlooked early 1950s Topps series. The equivalent SMR value for just the five graded cards (not including the other sixty-one ungraded cards) is $1,595. Total 66 cards representing 132 players. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000.
