Enormous Assortment of 1960 Lake to Lake Dairy Braves (266 cards Including Near-Complete Set)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,058
Gigantic collection of 266 assorted Lake to Lake Dairy Braves cards including a near-complete set comprised of 26 of the 28 cards highlighted by the rare Bill Bruton card. Missing only Boone and Torre for completion. When Lake to Lake Dairy regionally issued this unusual blue tint set honoring the Milwaukee Braves, they did not have the condition concerns of modern collectors in mind. The cards were issued stapled to milk cartons. Yikes! Stapled to milk cartons! Sounds terrible! In addition, when collected and sent in to be redeemed for prizes as offered on the backs, each card had a hole punched in the corner or was ink-stamped on the back so they could not be redeemed twice. Collectors are sometimes fooled into thinking Lake to Lakes are easily found in high grade, without punch holes and unstapled, because large quantities of nine cards from the set were obtained in that rare ideal form direct from Lake to Lake by the legendary Bruce Yeko, one of the hobby’s earliest full- time card dealers. Yeko sold those same nine cards in perfect condition for years throughout the 1960s and early 1970s. However, after those readily available nine cards, the rest are nearly impossible to find in high grade, without staple holes (which are usually torn) or punch holes. All of the cards (except two: Jay and Myatt) in this collection have staple holes or punch holes, or both (and a handful have the Lake to Lake ink-stamp cancellation on reverse). The rare Bruton card is in Poor condition. In addition to the near-set (26 different cards), the collection includes the following 240 duplicates (quantities in parenthesis): Aaron, Adcock (3), Buhl (9), Burdette (6), Cottier (14), Covington (10), Crandall (16), Giggie (24), Logan (6), Mantilla (3), Maye (3), McMahon (11), Myatt, Pafko (25), Pizzaro (22), Roach (3), Rush (9), Scheffing, Schoendienst (19), Spahn (42), and Spangler (12). We're not sure how this enormous collection of Lake to Lakes came to be, but there is probably a great long-lost story to this unusual find. All we can be sure of is that it involves a lot of milk! These 266 cards were obviously collected one card at a time in Milwaukee at the time of issue. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 266 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,058
