1965 Topps "Push-Pull" Near-Complete Set (33 of 36)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,293
Rarely offered near-complete set of the extremely unusual 1965 Topps "Push-Pull" series includes thirty-three different of the thirty-six cards in the set plus fourteen duplicates for a total of 47 cards. Missing only the following three cards for completion: #4, 15, and 20. Issued by the Topps card company, this uniquely designed 36-card set combined sports and nonsport subjects. The cards (2-12 x 4-11/16 inches), each featuring two subjects, are designed with a shutter attached to a tab (the tab reads “Push-Pull”), which is moved up and down to display each of the underlying images. To sports collectors, this set is particularly noteworthy as it is highlighted by three cards featuring Major League ballplayers in the series: #6 Mantle/Berra (Vg), 17 Ruth/Gehrig (Ex), and 19 Stengel wins/Stengel loses (Ex-Mt). The Stengel card, naturally, pictures Casey alternatively grinning and frowning, depending on which way the shutter is set. Due to their fragile and metamorphic design, they are susceptible to major damage, including border chipping on the black edges, and are often found with the shutter damaged or entirely lost. This set has a far better appearance than its technical grade, with most cards clean and crisp with very light edge and corner wear, and with a separate original shutter included with each card. Also included are fourteen duplicates: #3, 8, 12, 16, two 19 Stengel (Ex and Vg), 21, 24, 26, 28, 31, 33, 34, and 35. Overall Vg-Ex condition. Total 47 cards (near-set of 33 cards plus 14 duplicates). Reserve $200. Estimate $500+ SOLD FOR $1,293
