1889 M-UNC Police Gazette Cabinet Chas. Getzien
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,525
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Presented is a very attractive sample cabinet card from the rare Police Gazette series featuring star pitcher Charlie Getzien of the Detroit Wolverines. It is interesting to note Getzien’s name is misspelled “Gatzein” on this card. Getzien was one of top pitchers in the 1880s. He is especially noted for winning four games during the fifteen-game postseason championship series against the St. Louis Browns of the American Association in 1887, which the Wolverines won 10 games to 5. This card has an incredible visual appeal, and features a tremendous photograph with simply astounding contrast. The green mount displays very light wear on the edges and corners, and a tiny one-quarter inch tear in from the lower left edge. The gilt-embossed imprint is bold and clearly printed. A few notations on the blank reverse. Aside from the very minor faults which are responsible for the extremely harsh SGC grade, the card is in strong Excellent condition and is one of the most impressive looking of all Police Gazette cabinets. This is an extremely striking example from this rare nineteenth-century issue. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,525
