Two High-Grade 1968 Topps 3-D Ron Fairly Cards Including Rare "No Dugout" Variation

Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $1,645

Offered are high-grade examples of both variation cards of Ron Fairly from the rare 1968 Topps 3-D set, including the extremely rare Ron Fairly's "no dugout" variation card, both graded and encapsulated by PSA ("no dugout" graded PSA NM-MT 8 and "dugout" graded PSA MINT 9). The Ron Fairly card was produced with and without a dugout in the background, and this lot includes both variations. Almost all examples known have the dugout in the background. The "no dugout" card in this lot is one of just several known examples of Ron Fairly which feature this significant and fairly dramatic though virtually unknown variation. This card probably long ago originated from someone who was involved in some manner with the production of the set at Xograph, the Texas-based company that worked with Topps to produce this test issue. Both for their extreme rarity, as well as for their very striking and unique design, advanced collectors have always held 1968 Topps 3-D cards in the highest esteem. The fragile nature of all 3-D cards (very susceptible to surface cracks), make high-grade examples all the rarer. This is a very attractive pair of cards, including this very rare and unusual variation, from this highly prized 1960s Topps test issue, both in extremely high grade. Total 2 cards. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500+. SOLD FOR $1,645
