1894 N142 Duke Cabinet William Nash
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819
Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Duke cabinet cards are among the rarest, most impressive, and desirable of all pre-1900 issues. They are also one of the few full-color pre-1900 issues, and the only full color pre-1900 cabinet-card issue. In addition, they were issued in an era (mid-1890s) in which there were very few baseball card sets, making this issue all the more significant to collectors. There are only four ballplayers in this set. Offered is a magnificent sample from this legendary set of early Boston star third baseman William Nash. The card is bright, crisp, and clean, with virtually no edge wear, a perfect surface, flawlessly bold colors, and two very slightly chipped corners in the top left and lower right. The initials (apparently of the original owner) “J.C.M.” are neatly written in small letters at the top of the blank reverse. Aside from the minor faults, this card displays an overall strong Excellent appearance. This is a beautiful card and an outstanding example of one of card collecting's rarest and most highly prized nineteenth-century cabinet-card issues. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000.
