1922 Pittsburgh Pirates Signed Photograph Collection (23)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,880
Collection of twenty-three sepia-tone photos depicting various members of the 1922 Pittsburgh Pirates, each signed in black fountain pen by the respective player or players. This is a very unusual and interesting group of unique original photos, all the more so because they are autographed. These photos were taken prior to a home game and picture the players in uniform during pre-game warmups. While a few feature posed images, most are candid in nature and capture the players either at the plate during batting practice or throwing on the side lines. All but one of the photos are of individual players and each has been signed by the respective team member on the front. The twenty-two individually signed photos are of Babe Adams (two different images), Clyde Barnhart (two different images), Carson Bigbee (two different images), Hal Carlson, Max Carey (dated 1922), Jewel Ens, Johnny Gooch, Charley Grimm, Earl Hamilton, Clarence Jonnard (three different images), Jim Mattox (two different images), Johnny Morrison, Roy Rohwer, Reb Russell, and Cotton Tierney (two different images). The final photo pictures Walter Schmidt, Cotton Tierney, and Charley Grimm posing together and has been signed by each player below his respective image. Aside from the fact that Carey has dated his photo "1922," these photos can also be positively dated to that year based upon the players pictured; Clarence Jonnard only played with Pittsburgh in 1922. Signatures range in grade from "7" to "10," averaging "9/10." The one multiplayer photo measures 8.5 x 6.5 inches and is in Good to Very Good condition, with two corner chips and a few edge tears, one of which affects Schmidt's signature. The twenty-two individual player photos measure between 4.25 x 6.5 and 5 x 7 inches and range in grade from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
