1922 New York Yankees Signed Ball with Ruth
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,231
Draper & Maynard “Cock of the Walk” baseball signed in black fountain pen by eight members of the 1922 New York Yankees. The signature of Babe Ruth sits alone on the sweet spot and grades “5.” The remaining Yankee signatures are those of Carl Mays, Wally Schang, Mike McNally, Chick Fewster, Everett Scott, Bob Shawkey, and Joe Bush. Also appearing on the ball are the signatures of Stan Coveleski and George Uhle, both of whom were on the Cleveland Indians in 1922, and two others (illegible). The signatures of Joe Bush and Everett Scott appear to be partially enhanced, otherwise the signatures range from “1” to “5,” averaging “4.” Despite the limited number of signatures, the ball can be conclusively dated to 1922 due to the combination of names present (the eight identified Yankee players only appeared together on the 1922 roster). 1922, of course, is extremely early for a Yankees team ball, and the early Babe Ruth signature on the sweet spot makes this an extremely desirable signed ball that would be at home in many different types of advanced collections. The ball is moderately toned and displays a few areas of light discoloration and a small number of minor abrasions (none of which affect the Ruth signature). In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,231
