Rare Joe Kelley Signed Handwritten Career Statistics - PSA Mint 9
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,400
The finest Joe Kelley signed 3 x 5-inch card in existence! This is the ultimate example of one of Hall of Fame signature collecting's key rarities. Encapsulated by PSA/DNA, with the signature receiving a grade of MINT 9. This extraordinary piece features not only an impeccable black fountain-pen signature example of the Hall of Fame outfielder, but also Kelley's handwritten "baseball biography" in which he lists all of the teams he played for, as well as his years of service with each respective club. Kelley's signature appears on the top line of the card, below which are the following scripted notations (all in Kelley's hand): "Born 1871 Cambridge Mass. Played Lowell New England League, Boston National 1891 Omaha, Pittsburg, Baltimore, 1892 With Baltimore Pennant Winners 1894-95-96- Went to Brookly (sic) 1899 Won Pennant 99-1900 Cincinnati 1902-3-4-5-6 Boston Nationals 1908 -Toronto." Joe Kelley's signature is one of the most difficult Hall of Famers to obtain in any form, let alone such an ideal form as presented here. His signature has been highly sought after by advanced collectors. The example offered here is the finest and most ideal-for-display Joe Kelley signed item we have ever seen, made all the more desirable by the additional handwritten notations by Kelley relating to his career. The primary reason for the extreme rarity of Kelley's signature today is timing. In addition to playing his career in an era in which signature collecting was not very popular, Kelley passed away in 1943, and he wasn’t elected to the Hall of Fame until 1971. For nearly thirty years he was simply forgotten by autograph collectors. That lack of foresight by earlier collectors has resulted in Kelley's signature becoming a "holy grail" for anyone trying to assemble a substantial Hall of Fame autograph collection. All of Kelley's handwritten notations grade "9/10" and the index card is in Excellent to Mint condition. This is an extraordinary example of one of the most revered rarities in the field of Hall of Fame autograph collecting. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000.
