Circa 1930 Chicago Cubs Signed George Burke Photo with Hack Wilson and Gabby Hartnett

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,880

Original George Burke photo of Hack Wilson, Gabby Hartnett, Pat Malone, and Dan Taylor together, hamming it up for the camera; signed in blue fountain pen by each player across his respective image. The players are pictured in their home whites lying on the verdant grass at Wrigley Field. Except for the dour Malone, the rest of the boys seem to be having a fun time with the shot, as Wilson, Hartnett, and Taylor are captured in the throes of laughter. Each of the signatures, which have now taken on a dark purple hue, contrast exceptionally well against the light background and grade "8/9." George Burke was one of the most famous baseball photographers of his era and this photo represents one of his earliest works. Burke became the Cubs' official photographer in 1929 and, based upon the players pictured here, this photo can only date from the three-year period 1929-1931. Taylor appeared in just two games with the Cubs in 1929, so it is nearly certain that this photo was taken in either 1930 or 1931. Burke's italicized credit stamp appears on the reverse. The photo (6 x 4 inches) displays a small tear on the left border (touching upon Malone's image) that has been repaired with a small piece of vintage tape on the reverse. Wear is evident along each corner and a minor horizontal crease runs along the bottom border. The reverse displays moderate surface paper loss and heavy adhesive residue along the perimeter from having once been mounted in an album. While technically in Good condition, the central image area and the signatures are free of any major flaws and the photo displays exceptionally well. This is an early classic image from the gifted lens of George Burke that is further accentuated by the vintage signatures. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,880
