Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Signed Book

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,406

Hardbound first edition of The Threat of Leisure by George Barton Cutten (Yale University Press, 1926), signed on the interior back cover by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Ruth’s signature is scripted in bold, blue fountain pen (grading “10”), while Gehrig’s is executed in pencil (grading “9/10”) directly below. Also appearing on the back cover is the signature of “Kenneth Bangs” (probably the original owner) and a notation indicating that he is a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity house. The front flyleaf bears the scripted notation “Property of Bang + Burgland Inc.” and a hand-drawn logo that reads “Bang, Burgland and Co. – ‘We Never Sleep.’” While we'll never know the story of how Ruth and Gehrig came to sign this book, it seems that the subject matter would have been more to Gehrig’s taste than Ruth’s. Regardless of its history, the signatures are impeccable, having been beautifully preserved and protected from all elements on the interior of the hard cover (an ideal signing surface) and would make a fine addition to any substantial autograph collection. The ideal ultra high quality and sturdiness of the signing surface makes these signatures far better than traditional cut signatures. The fact that both the Ruth and Gehrig signatures are together here makes this an all the more interesting signature find, in that the Ruth and Gehrig signatures could be removed from the back cover (cut from the cover), if desired, providing an almost-never-seen Ruth-Gehrig dual-signature cut. The 166-page book (without dust jacket) displays moderate wear along the cloth boards, including a tear in the spine, and pencil notations can be found on two of the interior pages. In Very Good to Excellent condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $4,406
