Ducky Medwick Memorabilia Collection with Two Vintage Single-Signed Balls (5)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,293

This collection of Ducky Medwick material, which consists of two signed balls, a St. Louis Cardinals hat, a commemorative bat, and a Christmas card, is distinguished by its interesting and impeccable provenance. Each of the items offered here originates from the estate of Frank McCarthy, who was Medwick's high school baseball coach at Cartaret High in New Jersey, and has been consigned directly by the McCarthy family. McCarthy and Medwick, like many coaches and players, remained good friends over the years, and Medwick often presented his mentor with baseball-related gifts. 1-2) The great admiration Medwick had for McCarthy is clearly communicated by the salutations on the two signed balls offered here. Both are vintage official National League balls (dating from Medwick's Major League playing career) and each has been inscribed in black ink by Medwick. The first reads "To McCarthy - The best coach I ever had pleasure to play for - Joe Medwick." The lengthy inscription, which is centered on the sweet spot, crosses over to a side panel, and Medwick's signature ("grading "8") appears directly on the panel below. The ball (ONL Frick) is lightly soiled, with a few tiny abrasions, and is in overall Very Good to Excellent condition. The second ball is inscribed "To coach McCarthy - Best coach I ever played for - Joe Medwick." Both the inscription and signature are centered on the sweet spot and grade "4/5" overall. The ball (ONL Heydler) is lightly soiled and also in Very Good to Excellent condition. 3) The solid red St. Louis Cardinals cap features the team's logo embroidered upon a red, square patch, which is affixed to the front. A "New Era - Pro Model" label is situated along the rear of the leather headband. The name "Medwick" and the number "7" are both written in faded black marker on the underside of the brim. This cap most likely dates from the late 1960s, when Medwick was a minor league hitting instructor with the Cardinals. Moderate wear is displayed throughout, including minor soiling. In Very Good to Excellent condition. 4) The bat is an H&B Joe Medwick signature model that features the block-letter stamping "PRESENTED BY" directly above Medwick's facsimile signature. Obviously, this is a commemorative bat that was specially ordered by Medwick to present as gifts to his friends. The full-size bat measures 35 inches in length and, aside from a few tiny nicks along the knob and top of the barrel, is in Excellent to Mint condition. 5) The final item in the collection is a 1974 Christmas card from Medwick and his wife (Isabelle) to McCarthy's family (Ex-Mt). The card is signed by Medwick's wife and also includes a handwritten letter from her. Together with the original mailing envelope (postmarked December 19, 1974). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Total: 5 items (two balls, cap, bat, and card). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,293
