1942 Babe Ruth Signed Golf Score Card

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,880

Golf score card, from the Crestmont Golf Club in West Orange, New Jersey, signed in pencil (grading "9/10") on the interior by Babe Ruth. Unlike the vast majority of Ruth signed items today, the history of this piece is well documented. Ruth signed it in the summer of 1942 while he was taking part in a golf tournament held at the club. The source of this information: our eighty-two-year-old consignor, who personally obtained the autograph on that day! Not many people today can state that they met Babe Ruth, let alone personally acquired his signature, but our consignor is one of the lucky few. The encounter was obviously a big thrill for him, for in listening to his reminiscence about the chance meeting he has remembered every little detail from the day, including what he had for lunch and what Ruth was drinking on that afternoon. Ideally, he has even supplied a handwritten letter detailing the circumstances of his obtaining the signature. According to his detailed recollection, he was fifteen years old at the time and was working as a caddy on the links. He writes in part: "I was going down the first hole and Babe was going up the ninth fairway. I could see him in the distance. After finishing my round we went toward the pro shop. Babe was chipping and putting and talking with some members of the club. My friend and I got a golf score card and asked Babe to sign it. I kept it safe for over sixty years." The Crestmont Golf Club (its name was changed to the Crestmont Country Club in 1954) is still in operation today and is located just thirty minutes from the offices of Robert Edward Auctions. The fold-over card (10.5 x 3.75 inches, unfolded) displays minor creasing and light foxing on the back cover. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,880
