Ty Cobb Signed Autograph Album Page

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058

Album sheet, removed from the legendary autograph album compiled by Dr. John O'Meara in the 1930s, signed by Hall of Fame outfielder Ty Cobb. (The original near-complete album is also offered in this auction; please see the lot description for full details.) Cobb elected to forgo his customary green ink when signing this page, instead scripting is name in bold black fountain pen. The signature is perfect in all respects and grades ‘10.’ Cobb has added his date of birth and the current year, ‘Dec-18-1886 1934,’ directly below his signature. Interestingly, O'Meara didn't collect this Ty Cobb signature personally. Apparently, O'Meara had no qualms about actually sending his autograph album to players by mail and then relying on them to send it back. Such was the case with Cobb. We know this because included in O'Meara's collection when originally sold years ago was a handwritten letter from Cobb to Dr. O'Meara in which he explicitly references the return of the autograph album, signed by him at Dr. O'Meara's request. At the time this album was signed, Cobb was considered by many to be the greatest player in the history of the game. That sentiment was echoed two years later by the nation's sportswriters when Cobb was selected as one of the first five inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame, receiving more votes than any other player including Ruth. The page (5.5 x 4.5 inches) has been neatly removed from the original album and is in Near Mint condition. Encapsulated by Beckett Grading Services in conjunction with James Spence Authentication. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,058
