Walter Johnson/Lou Gehrig Signed Autograph Album Page

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,819

Album sheet, removed from the legendary autograph album compiled by Dr. John O'Meara in the 1930s, signed, on opposite sides, by Walter Johnson and Lou Gehrig, respectively. (The original near-complete album is also offered in this auction; please see the lot description for full details.) Both players have the boldly signed the sheet in blue fountain pen and each signature grades ‘10.’ Johnson has inscribed the front of the album sheet ‘Best Wishes Walter Johnson Cleveland Ball Club 1933,’ while Gehrig has simply signed the reverse in the upper left corner. Walter Johnson took over the managerial duties in Cleveland midway through the 1933 season, replacing Roger Peckinpaugh on June 10th. Since it is likely that O'Meara obtained the Johnson signature during one of Cleveland's trips to Boston (O'Meara lived in Providence, Rhode Island) to play the Red Sox, it was probably obtained either in July (during a three-game series on the 16th through the 19th) or September (during a two-game series on the 18th and 19th). It should be noted that the position of the Gehrig signature on the reverse would easily allow for the sheet to be cut horizontally, thereby separating the two signatures (without affecting either signature or any of Johnson's inscription) if so desired. The page (5.5 x 4.5 inches) has been neatly removed from the original album and is in Near Mint condition. Encapsulated by Beckett Grading Services in conjunction with James Spence Authentication. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,819
