Lou Gehrig Signed Autograph Album Page

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,644

Album sheet, removed from the legendary autograph album compiled by Dr. John O'Meara in the 1930s, signed by Hall of Fame first baseman Lou Gehrig. (The original near-complete album is also offered in this auction; please see the lot description for full details.) Flawlessly scripted in black fountain pen, grading "10." This is one of two Gehrig signatures found in O'Meara's album, and is the only Gehrig signature that is all alone on its own page. The other example resides on the back of the album page that Walter Johnson has signed on the front. The fact that the other example is executed in blue fountain pen indicates that they were most likely obtained at different dates. Since this was the only duplicate signature in the album, we might surmise that O'Meara either held Gehrig in high esteem (he could have had any of the other players sign more than one page, if he wished), or that he felt that Gehrig's stature demanded his signature appear alone on a single page. Perhaps it was for both reasons. Whatever the circumstances of the duplication were at the time, one thing is certain: both are spectacular, pristine Gehrig signature examples which have been perfectly preserved, protected from all elements including light, within the confines of the signature album for the past seventy years. This is an outstanding Gehrig signature example penned during the peak of his career. The page (5.5 x 4.5 inches) has been neatly removed from the original album and is in Near Mint condition. Encapsulated by Beckett Grading Services in conjunction with James Spence Authentication. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,644
