1948 Brooklyn Dodgers Team-Signed Ball with Robinson and Campanella

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,528

Official National League (Frick) ball signed in blue or black ink by an incredible thirty-seven members of the 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers plus announcer Red Barber and sportswriter Dick Young. This ball was almost certainly signed during spring training of 1948, as it includes the signatures of a number of players who did not make the official roster that season. If so, this is one of the earliest Brooklyn Dodgers team-signed balls featuring the signature of Hall of Fame catcher Roy Campanella, who debuted with the Dodgers in 1948. The twenty-seven roster players represented on the ball are Robinson, Campanella (sweet spot), Vaughan, Reese (one the ball label, clubhouse), Hodges, Cox, Hermanski, Furillo (sweet spot), Edwards, Miksis, Brown, Ward, Jorgensen, Lund, Bragan, Ramazzotti, Barney, Branca, Hatten, Roe, Palica, Minner, Taylor, Hall, Van Cuyk (sweet spot), King, and Banta. The ten non-roster signatures on the ball are those of Cal Abrams, Jake Pitler, Chris Van Cuyk, Frenchy Bordagaray (coach or scout), Hugh Casey, Ken Olson, Cookie Lavagetto (clubhouse), Charles Deal (clubhouse) and two others (illegible). The signatures of longtime radio announcer Red Barber (sweet spot) and New York sports columnist Dick Young also appear on the ball. The name “Leo Lanigan” is printed in black ink on the ball label (probably the name of the original owner). The signatures are all strong and fairly uniform in grade, averaging “7/8.” This is a particularly outstanding and complete 1948 Dodgers team ball. The ball has been coated with a light layer of protective shellac and is in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $1,528
