1930s Multi-Signed Ball with Ruth, Gehrig and Four Other Hall of Famers
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,528
Baseball (appears to be an official American League ball with markings worn) signed in blue and black fountain pen by Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and other prominent stars from the 1930s, including four additional Hall of Fame players. Ruth's signature occupies its customary position on the sweet spot and grades "2/3," while Gehrig's is situated on a side panel and grades "3." The remaining legible signatures on the ball are those of Hank Greenberg, Mickey Cochrane (sweet spot, below Ruth's signature), Joe Cronin, Rick Ferrell, Wes Ferrell, Tommy Bridges, and Jo Jo White. There are a few additional signatures on the ball which are either illegible or have faded beyond recognition. The signatures range from "1" to "3," averaging "2." This ball was originally obtained by our consignor from the grandson of a couple who ran a concession stand outside Fenway Park in the 1930s. Unfortunately, the family failed to properly store the ball over the years, and it suffers from extreme age/sun toning. The heavy toning is in large part responsible for the low signature grades, as they contrast poorly against the dark surface of the ball. A ball such as this is particularly desirable to many collectors as it represents a relatively affordable alternative for collectors wishing to obtain an authentic Ruth/Gehrig ball without having to "empty the bank" in the process. In Good to Very Good condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,528
