Circa 1935 Grover Alexander House of David Signed Photo Postcard

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,410

This may be the ultimate Grover Cleveland Alexander signed photo. Souvenir card of Hall of Fame pitcher Grover Alexander featuring him as a member of the fabled House of David, signed by Alexander in pencil on the front. This is not technically a postcard, in that the back is blank, but is a souvenir card specifically made for Alexander to sign and give to fans during his tenure as one of the great draws with the House of David barnstorming team in the 1930s. This is why all of the few known examples are signed, and why Alexander is otherwise not identified on the card. (He didn't have to be; his signature was intended to, and does, appear on each). The card (3.25 x 5.5 inches) has been encapsulated, and the signature graded NM 7 by PSA/DNA. After his Major League career ended in 1930 Alexander took to barnstorming with the House of David baseball team, appearing with the club from approximately 1931 through 1938. Although the House of David was founded as a religious commune in Benton Harbor, Michigan, in 1902, it is best remembered today for its renowned barnstorming baseball team featuring a lineup of hirsute ballplayers (the practice of shaving was forbidden by members of the order) that toured the country taking on all comers. Alexander was never a formal member of the sect, but was on the club strictly as a drawing card, so he was given an exemption and this is the reason for his clean-shaven appearance here. The card, which is printed on high-quality card stock, is in extraordinary Excellent to Mint condition. (Note: A JSA authentication sticker is affixed onto the back of the card in the lower right corner.) This is an extraordinary signed example, by far the finest we have ever seen, of the rare House of David souvenir card of Alexander, one of the best of all House of David items and one of the premier of all signed Grover Cleveland Alexander items. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,410
