1938 New York Yankees World Champions Team-Signed Ball with Gehrig
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,998
Goldsmith "Official League" ball beautifully signed in blue fountain pen by thirty members of the 1938 World Champion New York Yankees. This is a very clean sharp-looking ball! Signers: Gehrig (side panel, grading "7," partially atop one of the manufacturer's stamps), DiMaggio, Gordon, Dickey (sweet spot), Ruffing, Combs (coach), McCarthy (Mgr., clubhouse signature), Gomez (clubhouse signature), Rolfe, Henrich, Selkirk, Hoag, Knickerbocker, Powell, Glenn, Dahlgren, Jorgens, Pearson, Chandler, Hadley, Murphy, Sundra, Beggs, Wicker, Andrews, Donald, Stine, Vance, Schreiber (coach/scout), and Schulte. Also present on the ball are the signatures of Buddy Rosar (he played with the Yankees from 1939 through 1942), Ernie Koy (he played with four National League teams, including Brooklyn from 1938 through 1940), and Jack Fallon (he played with Newark, the Yankees top farm club, in 1938). The fact that this ball includes Rosar, Koy, and Fallon suggests that it was most likely obtained during spring training in 1938, perhaps at an exhibition game against the Dodgers. The signatures range from "6" to "8," averaging "7," with the exception of DiMaggio ("4/5," bleeding). 1938 marked the third of New York's four consecutive World Championships during the decade and also the last full season for Hall of Fame first baseman Lou Gehrig, who would be stricken with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) the following year. The ball displays beautifully, with extremely bold color to the red-and-black stitches, just a little natural light surface wear, and all of the manufacturer's stampings bold and legible. Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500.
