1940 Joe McCarthy and Lefty Gomez Signed New York Yankees Contracts
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,880
Pair of 1940s New York Yankees contracts signed, respectively, by manager Joe McCarthy and pitcher Lefty Gomez. Both McCarthy and Gomez were riding high at the time these contracts were signed, with the Yankees having just won a record fourth consecutive World Championship in 1939. However, in the case of McCarthy's contract one would never know it, considering his salary for the year was just $1.00 plus "other considerations." Unfortunately, those "other considerations" are not listed within this contract and were probably enumerated in a separate agreement. Gomez fared much better up front, receiving $15,000 for the season, but a sore arm limited him to just three wins in 1940. Gomez's poor performance, coupled with the loss of Lou Gehrig on offense, doomed the Yankees to an uncustomary third-place finish that season. The McCarthy contract, which is a standard "Uniform Manager's Contract" is dated April 2, 1940, and is signed by both "Joseph V. McCarthy" and "E. G. Barrow." The Gomez contract, which is a standard "Uniform Player's Contract," is also dated April 2, 1940, and signed by both "Vernon Gomez" and "E. G. Barrow." Both contracts have also been signed by American League President "William Harridge" on the front. All of the signatures have been boldly scripted in black fountain pen and grade "10." Each contract measures 8.5 x 11 inches and is in Excellent condition. New York Yankees contracts from this era are highly prized by collectors, especially those of Hall of Famers, and these are two exceptional examples dating from the end of the club's historic 1936-1939 dynasty. Total: 2 contracts. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate $800+. SOLD FOR $1,880
