Signed Black-and-White Hall of Fame Postcard Collection with Ott, J. Robinson, Clarke, Griffith, McKechnie and Many Other Rarities (31 of 50 Possible)

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $8,225

Signed Baseball Hall of Fame black-and-white postcards have always been held in extremely high esteem by collectors. Offered here is a phenomenal collection of thirty-one signed black-and-white Hall of Fame postcards representing thirty different players. Among the highlights are cards signed by Mel Ott, Jackie Robinson, Paul Waner, Pie Traynor, Ed Walsh, Bill McKechnie, Clark Griffith, Elmer Flick, and Fred Clarke. Signed examples of these postcards are not only rare but also very limited in terms of potentially available players. Hall of Fame black-and-white postcards were only produced during the twenty-year period 1944 to 1963. During that span, postcards for ninety-four Hall of Fame members were issued, including many players who were elected posthumously. Of the ninety-four black-and-white postcards issued, only fifty were produced during the lifetime of the respective Hall of Fame player. Thus, a complete collection of signed Hall of Fame black-and-white postcards numbers just fifty. Today, Bob Feller is the only living Hall of Fame player that can be found on a Hall of Fame black-and-white postcard. The offered collection represents sixty percent of all possible signed black-and-white Hall of Fame postcards in the set. This is a tremendous high-quality group, rarely found in such a significant offering, featuring more than half the complete set of potentially signed cards. Unless otherwise noted, all of the cards are Artvue cards that have been signed in blue or black ink on the front, with the signatures grading “9” or “10.” The collection is comprised of Max Carey (Carey has added the words "Aim High" at the top of the card, Vg-Ex), Fred Clarke (Albertype, Ex), Mickey Cochrane (small area of surface paper loss on the reverse; otherwise Ex), Sam Crawford (signed on the front and also dated and inscribed on the reverse “April 2-65 – To Dick, With all good wishes – Wahoo Sam,” Vg-Ex), Joe Cronin (black marker, Nr-Mt), Bill Dickey (blue Sharpie, Nr-Mt), Joe DiMaggio (blue marker, Ex-Mt), Bob Feller (Nr-Mt), Elmer Flick (Ex), Frankie Frisch (green ink, Vg-Ex), Charlie Gehringer (black marker, Nr-Mt), Hank Greenberg (Ex-Mt), Clark Griffith (Albertype, Vg-Ex), Lefty Grove (Vg), Gabby Hartnett (Vg), Carl Hubbell (black marker, Vg), Ted Lyons (blue Sharpie, inscribed "Best Wishes - To Larry - Ted Lyons," Nr-Mt), Joe McCarthy (inscribed "With best wishes - to Larry Killeen from Joe McCarthy - July 22, 1957," Ex, with adhesive residue on the reverse), Bill McKechnie (inscribed "To Chuck - Best Regards - Bill McKechnie," Vg), Mel Ott (Albertype, signed on the reverse, postcard is addressed and mailed, postmarked 5/5/53, Ex), Sam Rice (signature penned in black ink directly on his image, Ex-Mt), Jackie Robinson (inscribed "Best Wishes John - Jackie Robinson," Ex), Edd Roush (two examples, one in black marker, Nr-Mt, the other Ex), Ray Schalk (Vg-Ex), George Sisler ("8," Ex-Mt), Bill Terry (Nr-Mt), Pie Traynor (Ex), Ed Walsh (Vg-Ex), Paul Waner (Albertype, Vg-Ex), Zach Wheat (blue marker, Ex). Also included with this group is a black-and-white magazine photo (3.25 x 4 inches) of Thomas Connolly's Hall of Fame plaque, signed by Connolly in black felt-tip pen (grading "9"). Ex. (A Thomas Connolly signed black-and-white Hall of Fame plaque postcard is one of the key rarities in the set; this photo represents both a suitable and more affordable alternative.) As a point of reference, the current SMR value of this collection (not including the Thomas Connolly magazine photo, and halving the value of the Ott card because it is signed on the reverse) is $14,360. Total: 31 signed postcards (30 different players plus a magazine photo signed by Thomas Connolly). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $8,225
