Dazzy Vance Signed Photograph

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,058

Exceptional and extremely rare photo signed by Hall of Fame pitcher Dazzy Vance. The 8 x 10-inch photo, which pictures Vance as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers, has been inscribed in blue ink along the top border "To Larry - With kind regards - A. C. Dazzy Vance." Both the inscription and signature contrast extremely well against the light background and grade "7" or "8." The "Larry" to whom this photo is addressed is our consignor's father, who grew up in Brooklyn during the 1950s. Our consignor's father was, naturally, a Dodgers fan, and also an enthusiastic autograph collector, with this piece one of many personally obtained by him in his early collecting days. Whether it was foresight or simply a passion for obtaining the signatures of Dodgers players, both past and present, that motivated him to seek out Vance we will never know, but it was certainly a collecting coup. Dazzy Vance signed photos are exceedingly rare. The reason for their extreme rarity is in part due to timing. Vance retired in 1935 but wasn't elected to the Hall of Fame until 1955. Unfortunately he passed away in 1961, leaving just a short six-year "window of opportunity" for collectors in which to obtain his signature (and this era was one in which there was little opportunity for collectors to even get Vance's signature on special items). The photo has a few very light surface wrinkles, all of which are very minor and unobtrusive, and three small pieces of tape on the reverse. While technically in Very Good to Excellent condition, the photo presents at a much higher Excellent to Mint level. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,058
