1968 Detroit Tigers World Champions Team-Signed Ball
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,880
Official National League (Giles) ball signed in blue ink by the following thirty members of the 1968 World Champion Detroit Tigers: Kaline (sweet spot), Mathews, McLain (sweet spot), Cuccinello (coach, sweet spot), Smith (Mgr., on ball label), Sain, Sparma, Matchick, Tracewski, Wilson, Stanley, Brown, Patterson, McAuliffe, Naragon (coach), Dobson, Wert, McMahon, Price, Cash, Lolich, Freehan, Comer, Warden, Hiller, Oyler, Northrup, Horten, Moses (coach), and one other (illegible). The vintage blue ink notations “World’s Champions 1968” and “Detroit 1968” appear, respectively, on the sweet spot and the south panel. Signatures range from “7” to “9,” averaging “8.” This ball originates from the personal collection of Bob Bauman, who was a longtime Major League trainer with both the St. Louis Browns (1937-1953) and St. Louis Cardinals (1954-1988), and has been consigned to this auction directly by his son. (A total of eighty-four team-signed baseballs from the Bauman Collection, offered in twelve separate lots, are featured in this current auction.) Since this is a National League ball, it was most likely obtained by Bauman during the 1968 World Series (the Tigers defeated the Cardinals in seven games). This is an extraordinarily strong, ideal example of a particularly scarce and desirable World Champions team-signed ball. The ball displays only the slightest hint of age toning and is in Near Mint condition with extremely bold stampings. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,880
