Roger Maris Single-Signed Baseball

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,293

Wilson "Little League" baseball inscribed on a side panel by Roger Maris. The blue-ink inscription, which encompasses the entire panel, reads "To Billy - Best of Luck - Roger Maris." There is some slight surface wear that affects the words "Billy" and "Luck," otherwise both the inscription and signature grade "9." Roger Maris is one of the most desirable of all non-Hall of Fame signatures, especially alone on a baseball. Maris passed away prematurely in 1985, just prior to the "signing show boom," thus accounting for the rarity of Maris singles in the hobby today. Given those two facts, its not surprising that Maris is one of the most commonly forged of all modern-era signatures. Single-signed baseballs in general that are personalized traditionally sell for a discount to non-personalized examples. However, with all the problem "Maris" balls we have encountered in the marketplace, an elaborately inscribed Maris ball such as this should (in our opinion) actually be worth a premium. The ball displays a few small areas of surface wear, primarily on the signature panel, and is otherwise in Excellent to Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,293
