Extraordinary 500 Home Run Club Signed Baseball - 21 of 25 Possible Signatures!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,988
Offered here is one the most amazing and significant signed baseballs we have ever offered. This remarkable piece features the signatures of an incredible twenty-one of the twenty-five players who have hit 500 or more home runs and is missing only the signature of Barry Bonds for modern-day completeness. The signatures present on this Official American League (Brown) ball are those of Mickey Mantle (sweet spot), Ted Williams (sweet spot), Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Gary Sheffield, Manny Ramirez, Rafael Palmeiro, Reggie Jackson, Mark McGwire, Ken Griffey Jr., Jim Thome, Frank Robinson, Eddie Mathews, Mike Schmidt, Frank Thomas, Willie Mays, Alex Rodriguez, Ernie Banks, Harmon Killebrew, Willie McCovey, and Sammy Sosa. All of the signatures are scripted in blue ink and grade either "9" or "10." The ball is in Mint condition.
This is the most complete 500 Home Run Club Ball we have ever seen and it may very well be the most complete 500 Home Run ball in existence. It is very likely unique. Logic suggests that no ball exists bearing the signatures of all twenty-five members of the 500 Home Run Club, especially when one realizes that a collector would had to have had the foresight to get a ball signed by Babe Ruth, Jimmie Foxx, and Mel Ott decades ago, with just this purpose in mind. This 500 Home Run Club Ball is very likely as close to completion as possible that one could possibly hope to find. Our consignor has literally spent years and thousands of dollars in his pursuit of creating this piece, and while it is theoretically possible for another collector to replicate his feat, the odds against that happening are great. To begin with, one would need an earlier-signed 500 Home Run Club ball bearing the signatures of Mantle, Williams, and Mathews, each of whom is deceased. That's probably the easiest part. Obtaining the signatures of the living members, especially those of the fourteen most recent members of the club, is especially daunting. A number of the players are no longer as easily accessible as they have been in the past and getting all nineteen living members to appear together at one signing show has proven to be too difficult a task, even for the most intrepid promoters. Then there is the cost involved. Most of the players now charge exorbitant fees for signing any 500 Home Run Club related piece, which is the main reason most collectors have abandoned such projects. The fact that our consignor came within one signature (Bonds) of completing this ball is nothing short of miraculous. It is now up to the winner of this ball to continue the quest. First in obtaining the signature of Bonds, and then obtaining those of any future members. Luckily, the ball still has room to comfortably accommodate a few more signatures. While it is impossible to place an estimate on such a unique item, this is the type of item that when collectors review this auction years from now, whatever price it sells for may well be looked upon as a bargain. LOAs from James Spence/JSA and Steve Grad - PSA/DNA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $9,988
