1894 N142 Duke Cabinets Davis and Nash (2)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,231

Two of the four cards comprising the 1894 Duke cabinet set: George Davis and Billy Nash. 1) The Duke cabinet is perhaps the most impressive card ever produced of Hall of Famer George Davis. Davis was one of the premier shortstops of his day, and at the time this card was issued he was a member of the New York Giants. The offered card has a heavy vertical crease which cracks the surface and runs from the top to the bottom border, heavy corner wear (including two chipped corners), and general soiling on the blank reverse. Despite these condition problems, the card still displays very nicely. The image of Davis is bright and clean. 2) The Duke cabinet of W. M. Nash has a chipped corner, and some general soiling to the reverse. The portrait is unblemished and free of defects. While technically in fair condition due to the corner chip in the lower right, this is still an impressive-looking card. These cards are new to the organized hobby, and have been consigned directly from the family of the original owner. Two low-grade but still very desirable N142 Duke cabinets, representing exactly half of the set of one of card collecting's scarcest and most highly prized nineteenth-century cabinet-card issues. Total 2 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $3,231
