1879 National League Baseball Schedule

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $705

Exceedingly rare 1879 National League fold-out schedule and roster pamphlet published by the Base Ball Manual Publishing Co. of Cleveland, OH. The tri-fold pamphlet opens to reveal the complete 1879 schedule for the National League as well as the rosters for all eight clubs and the names of the League umpires. This extraordinary and extremely substantial schedule, which was designed for display when unfolded, dates from the National League's infancy and is not only one of the earliest National League schedule pieces in existence but the only example we have ever seen. The pamphlet (printed on thick paper stock), which is toned, measures 3.5 x 9.25 inches and unfolds to an overall size of 13.5 x 9.25 inches. The scores for all of the games from May 1st through June 24th have been neatly filled in by the original owner in blue ink. An irregularly shaped ink stain appears on the interior near the top border. The pamphlet displays numerous edge chips, the largest of which are located along the bottom border. In Good to Very Good condition overall. Despite the flaws, the schedule remains in fine condition given its age, fragile nature, and former use. This is an exceptional and extremely rare relic, with tremendous character, dating from the National League's fourth season of play. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000.
