Circa 1890 Baseball Publication and Scorecard Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,058

This diverse collection of nineteenth-century baseball memorabilia is comprised of three National League scorecards, a Harvard scorecard, and an 1890 Base Ball Book (featuring both the schedule and rules for the one-year Players League). 1) 1885 fold-over scorecard (6 x 7.75 inches) for a National League game between Boston and Providence, at Boston, on June 6th. An attractive game-in-progress illustration adorns the cover. Of special note, the interior features an advertisement for the famed Lawson's Base Ball Game Playing Card Set. The preprinted lineups include Sutton, Buffington, and Morrill for Boston, and Hines, Farrell, Daily, and Denny for Providence. Neatly scored in pencil to record a 6-2 Providence win. There are a number of stray pencil notations and markings on both the cover and interior, and the preprinted lineups for Providence have been gone over in ink. Vg-Ex. 2) Rare 1890 Base Ball Book, published by the Tourist Publishing Company of Boston. The thirty-two page booklet (3.5 x 5.75 inches), which was obviously a regional publication, is noteworthy for the fact that it covers the Boston entries in both the National League and the short-lived Players League. The Players League was only in existence for one season, giving this publication an all-the-greater significance to collectors. Stadium diagrams are provided for both Boston clubs, as well as the respective full-season schedules for each league. Also featured are the National League playing rules for 1890 and a one-page addendum listing the few rule variations adopted by the Players League. Aside from the name of a former owner ("Arthur W. Hollis") written in ink on the cover, the booklet is in Excellent to Mint condition. 3) 1893 fold-over scorecard (4.75 x 7.5 inches) for a National League game between Boston and Pittsburgh, at Boston, on June 12th. The preprinted lineups include Van Haltren, Shugart, Smith, and Lyons for Pittsburgh, and Duffy, McCarthy, Lowe, Carroll, and Ganzell for Boston. Neatly scored in pencil to record a 7-4 Boston victory. Moderately toned, otherwise Ex-Mt. 4) 1894 fold-over scorecard (4.75 x 7.5 inches) for a National League game between Boston and New York, at Boston, on May 22nd. The preprinted lineups include Ward, Rusie, Van Haltren, Doyle, and Murphy for New York, and Duffy, McCarthy, Lowe, Long, and Ganzell for Boston. Neatly scored in pencil to record a 3-2 Boston victory. Moderately toned, including a few small areas of light discoloration on the interior, plus a few light pencil notations on the interior. Ex. 5) 1895 fold-over scorecard (4.5 x 6.75 inches) for a baseball game between Harvard and the Newton Athletic Association, in Newton. The preprinted lineups include Dean, Winslow, Scannell, Highlands, and Rand for Harvard, and Mason, Hubbard, and Abbott for Newton. The program has not been scored. In Excellent condition, with a moderate corner crease on the back page. The items in this lot are from a previously unseen original-owner baseball publication collection from the Boston area that is featured in several lots in this auction. Total: 5 items. Reserve $400.
