1904 Allegheny Card Co. SGC-Graded Collection (6)

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $4,994

Collection of six pristine cards from the legendary Allegheny Card Company set of 1904, one of the largest groups we have seen assembled since the only known set was broken up and sold individually many years ago, each graded and encapsulated by SGC: Kitty Bransfield (Pittsburg, SGC EX/NM 80), John Farrell (St. Louis, EX 60), W. O. Gilbert (New York, EX 60), Rudy Hulswitt (Philadelphia, NM+ 86), Carl Lundgren (Chicago, NM+ 86), and Jimmy Sebring (Cincinnati, EX 60). This is a stunning group of these unique cards, all in extremely high grade, crisp and essentially flawless. To date, the only set of Alleghenys known to exist surfaced in the late 1980s, and was sold at that time as a complete set to legendary collector Jim Copeland. The set was then sold in the 1991 Copeland sale, purchased at that sale by another collecting legend, Lew Lipset, who, as the great scholar that he is, appreciated the tremendous significance of the set (which includes so many players that appear in few or no other sets due to its year of issue) as well as its extreme rarity. In the years that followed, the set was eventually broken up and dispersed to the four corners of the collecting world. There has yet to be a single additional card from this series to ever surface. These samples, of course, originate from the Copeland set, and as is the case with all Allegheny cards, each may very well be unique. The set is of special interest to collectors on many counts, both as rare samples and the players that are included in the set. Very few sets of baseball cards were produced during the first few years of the century. The Allegheny card set is one of the few, and offers a unique blend of players from the pre-1900 and post-1900 eras, including many players that appear in few (if any) other sets. Total 6 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000+.
