Significant Turn-of-the-Century Baseball Bat Rarities Collection (5)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,645

Collection of five rare and extremely high quality early "style" bats dating from the turn of the century. These are style bats of great rarity and significance, ideal for inclusion in an extremely advanced collection or world-class display devoted to the evolution of the bat. 1) Circa 1890 "ring" bat. Two black-painted rings are displayed on either side of a shield logo displayed on the barrel. All of the wording on the logo has faded beyond legibility with the exception of the words "New York" along the base. The bat features a thick handle and tapered knob, with lathe marks on both the knob and barrel end. Heavy use is displayed along its entire length, including grain separation along the top of the barrel. Length: 36 inches. Weight: 38.6 ounces. 2) Circa 1890s Spalding "Axletree" ring bat. The Spalding logo appears in the center, to the right of which is the black-painted "Axletree" lettering. The black-painted ring along the top of the barrel remains approximately eighty-five percent intact. The bat displays heavy use, including cleat marks. The Spalding logo and "Axletree" lettering remain clearly legible. Length: 34.5 inches. Weight: 32.8 ounces. 3) Circa 1905 J. F. Hillerich & Son bat. The center brand features the "J. F. Hillerich & Son" stamp used by the company between the years 1897 and 1911. This bat is especially fascinating in that the center brand has been stamped in a "left-handed" style (the left side of the center brand faces the barrel as opposed to the knob), and we cannot recall having ever seen another bat stamped in this manner. The bat displays moderate-to-heavy use. Length: 33 inches. Weight: 40.6 ounces. 4) Circa 1905 J. F. Hillerich & Son "Ball-Balanced" bat. The center brand features the "J. F. Hillerich & Son" stamp used by the company between the years 1897 and 1911 and the barrel is stamped "Ball Balanced - Trade Mark." The bat features a ball-shaped bulbous knob, hence its name. The bat displays moderate-to-heavy use. The "Ball-Balanced" stamp is light, but legible. Length: 33 inches. Weight: 44.4 ounces. 5) 1916-1917 Hillerich & Bradsby Co. bat. The center brand features the "Hillerich & Bradsby Co." stamp, with the "dash-dot-dash" pattern above and below the company name. This center brand was used by the company from 1916 through 1917. Remnants of a shipping label are evident on the barrel, and it appears that the bat once displayed side-writing, all of which has long since faded away. Heavy use is exhibited along its entire length, including a seven-inch crack in the handle (repaired by a single nail) and minor deadwood on all sides of the barrel (repaired by at least ten tiny "batboy" nails). Length: 34.5 inches. Weight: 37 ounces. Total: 5 bats. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+.
