1883 Philadelphia (vs. St. Louis) American Association Scorecard

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $588

This rare and extremely significant fold-over scorecard commemorates an 1883 American Association game between the Philadelphia Athletics and St. Louis Browns at Athletic Park (Jefferson Avenue Grounds) in Philadelphia. The preprinted lineups include Comiskey, Gleason, Lewis, Latham, Nicol, and Mullane for St. Louis, and Moynahan, Stovey, Birchall, Knight, and Bradley for Philadelphia. The scorecard is neatly scored in pencil and records a 4-3 win by Philadelphia. Although the scorecard is undated, research indicates that the only 4-3 home victory by Philadelphia over St. Louis in 1883 occurred on September 6th. The game recorded here was an extremely significant contest, as Philadelphia and St. Louis waged a close battle for first place all season. St. Louis traveled to Philadelphia on September 3rd for the start of an all-important four-game series. The Browns trailed Philadelphia in the standings by a half game entering the series, but recaptured the first-place lead with a 7-5 win in the opener. Philadelphia responded by winning the next three games, including the all-important fourth game recorded here (a victory in this game by Philadelphia meant a two-game swing in the standings). Having upped their lead after the series to 2.5 games, Philadelphia was then able to hold off the Browns for the final fourteen games, finishing the year as league champions with a 66-32 record and a one-game lead over their main rivals. The American Association was formed in 1882 and remained in existence for ten seasons before folding. This scorecard dates from the league's second season and is one of the earliest American Association scorecards we have ever seen. The scorecard (3.75 x 6 inches, folded) has some light foxing along the bottom half of the front cover (barely noticeable and mentioned merely for the sake of accuracy), and is otherwise in superb Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $588
