1886 New York (vs. Brooklyn) American Association Scorecard
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $529
This fold-over scorecard commemorates an American Association game between the New York Metropolitans and Brooklyn Grays held at the St. George Grounds in Staten Island on August 21, 1886. This is an exceptional scorecard example from an extremely rare and colorful series featuring, as noted on the beautifully designed cover, portraits of "The Great Mets." An illustrated portrait of New York catcher Charles Reipschlager appears on the front cover. The preprinted lineups include Pinkney, McClellan, Philips, and Swartwood for Brooklyn, and Forster, Orr, Behel, and Brady for New York. The scorecard is neatly scored in pencil and records a 10-3 win by New York. A few additional pencil notations appear on the interior, including the date "Saturday Aug 21/86." (Research has verified the accuracy of that date with regard to the score of the game.) The scorecard (4 x 6 inches) displays a very minor separation at the very top and bottom of the spine (as is often found with early scorecards, of no consequence, mentioned strictly for the sake of accuracy) and is otherwise in spectacular Excellent condition. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+.
