1902-1911 W600 Sporting Life Cabinet-Card Collection (10)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,994

Collection of ten W600 Sporting Life cabinets, including six Hall of Famers, highlighted by Nap Lajoie and "Iron Man" Joe McGinnity. This is a low-grade collection of these rare cabinet cards, but therefore relatively affordable (compared to examples in higher grade) and an extremely strong group in terms of the players included. The McGinnity is a particularly desirable highlight, both because its condition is superior to that of others in the lot (though not in high-grade, it is a very attractive card in approximately Vg condition) and because McGinnity is a very significant Hall of Famer appearing in very few sets. The W600 Sporting Life cabinet is one of McGinnity's few great cards. The collection consists of Mordecai Brown (HOF, Pr), Eddie Collins (HOF, slight trim, small surface scrape, otherwise Gd), William Dineen (slight trim, otherwise Gd), John Kling (slight trim, otherwise Vg-Ex), Nap Lajoie (HOF, Fr due to wear along the edges and the corners, soiling, and a couple ink marks on the back), Sherwood Magee (Gd), Joseph McGinnity (HOF, Vg), John McGraw (HOF, trimmed), James Slagle (Pr), and Vic Willis (Pr). W600s are one of the rarest sets from the early part of the century, and one of the most substantial and well-made card sets ever produced. W600s, Hall of Famers in particular, have always been highly prized by serious collectors. This is a very rare opportunity to acquire ten examples, including six Hall of Famers, from this extraordinary issue. Total 10 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
